Royal Hawaiin Golf Club

Royal Hawaiin Hole #5

Overview: Planning a trip to Hawaii or lucky enough to call the islands home? Then do yourself (and your golf swing) a favor and book a tee time at Royal Hawaiian Golf Club. Tucked deep in the lush, jungle draped mountains of O‘ahu, this course is where paradise meets punishment. The views? Absolutely stunning. The terrain? Less forgiving than your buddy after you take the last beer.

You’ll spend 18 holes in awe of the scenery and in search of your golf balls, which have likely gone rogue into the dense foliage. Don’t let the postcard perfect backdrop fool you; this course demands your A-game… or at the very least, a well-stocked bag of balls and a healthy sense of humor.

The drive in is nothing short of cinematic, lush grass, towering peaks, and that creeping suspicion that your GPS has taken you to Narnia. Once you arrive, though, it’s smooth sailing. Parking is easy, the clubhouse is welcoming, and the staff greet you with signature Hawaiian warmth. Just know, behind those kind smiles, they’ve seen what this course can do to a person. And they know, you’re in for a journey. I should’ve known what I was in for when the two players ahead of me didn’t just grab a sleeve of balls…they bought an entire BOX. Not a great omen. Regardless of where your game is at, do yourself a favor and double check your bag before you tee off. Trust me, you don’t want to be rationing golf balls like they’re MREs by hole 12.

Cost: For visitors, the standard rate is $180. If you’re lucky enough to live on island, the resident rate drops to a much friendlier $85. And look, you’ve already booked the flights, rented the car, sat through the snorkeling tour you didn’t ask for, don’t let the green fee scare you off now. Hand over the credit card. It’s worth every penny… and every Instagram photo you’ll shamelessly post afterward.

The Course: If you’re like me, whenever you’re about to play a new course, you head straight to the website, scrolling through hole layouts, checking yardages, maybe even trying to cook up a game plan. In the case of Royal Hawaiian? Go ahead, search, scroll, strategize all you want… it won’t matter. This course laughs in the face of preparation. The jungle doesn’t care about your plans, or the baby draw you think you can play on command. Royal Hawaiian isn’t especially long, clocking in around 6,500 yards, but don’t let that fool you, this is not a “grip it and rip it” kind of place. In fact, your driver might do more good staying in the bag. The fairways are relatively tight, and what looks like it’s in play usually isn’t. The jungle, the high grass, and the towering trees? That’s where golf balls go to die. It’s beautiful… and brutal.

Iron play is everything here. As tempting as it might be to pull out the driver, resist the urge. A well placed mid to long iron will serve you far better than trying to muscle your way through the jungle (ask me how I know). This is one of those rare courses where putting the ego aside and letting your irons and wedges take the wheel will actually save you strokes and sanity.

That said, “safe” doesn’t mean “easy.” Royal Hawaiian has a sneaky way of putting you in all kinds of awkward positions: sidehill lies, downhill lies, uphill lies, you name it. So even when you play it smart, expect to be tested. It’s like the course is gently reminding you: Welcome to Hawaii. Nothing is flat, and nothing is free.

The greens… oof. If I had one real complaint about Royal Hawaiian, this would be it. The pace? Slow, not a dealbreaker. But the condition? That’s another story. The greens were in rough shape during both of my rounds, with more scars than a used golf cart.

I don’t think I had a single straight putt all day, not because of wild breaks or alcohol consumption but because I was constantly navigating patches, bumps, and the occasional mystery bounce. It felt less like reading a green and more like decoding the ancient pyramids. Hopefully, maintenance catches up to the rest of the course’s beauty, because right now, the putting experience is the one part of the round that doesn’t match the setting.

Final Thoughts: Royal Hawaiian Golf Club is one of the most visually stunning and mentally demanding tracks you’ll play, not just in Hawaii, but anywhere. It’s a course that humbles you quickly, demands smart shot selection, and reminds you that sometimes, playing it safe is the bold move. Yes, the greens need some love, but the overall experience is unforgettable. Come for the views, stay for the challenge, and leave with a healthy respect for jungle golf. And seriously…bring extra balls

Until Next Time, Cheers.
